Citizen visioning takes an asset-based approach of exploring futures through exploring what members of the public like and value about a specific topic, as well as their hopes and fears. Group sizes are usually 15-40 people, and participants are often recruited as a reflective sample of a local area, in terms of demographics and sometimes relevant attitudes. Visioning usually takes place over three to six days.
This method provides the foundations for developing a shared vision and ideas or recommendations for a certain topic, usually on a place-based level. The approach is designed to feed into real life decision making and connects to wider strategies and activities. Visioning centres creativity and is delivered through dynamic facilitation techniques to meet different learning styles and experience levels.
A recent example of citizen visioning is in the Thriving Places programme where 25 local authorities will have the option to be supported to engage their communities in visioning processes. Each process will develop a vision for net zero that responds to local needs and priorities, and what makes each place unique.
So, how much does a citizen visioning process cost?
A Citizen Visioning process will cost between £75,000 - £150,000 depending on the number of participants, number of days, communications and follow up activities. .
