Elizabeth Cunningham

Engagement Lead – Science, Technology and Data

Elizabeth is an engagement lead in science, technology and data and programme manager of Sciencewise, working across the Capacity Building and Standards and Innovation and Practice teams. Elizabeth is a nuclear physicist by research background, with over fourteen years experience of public engagement in the physical sciences.

In a varied career studying astronomy, astrophysics and nuclear physics, Elizabeth has examined the exotic nuclear matter created in stars at Canada’s national nuclear physics laboratory, completed her doctorate in theoretical nuclear physics at the University of Surrey and worked as a planetarium astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. She has also carried out research into the atmosphere of Saturn’s largest moon Titan at Imperial College London.

Before moving to Involve in 2024 Elizabeth worked as a public engagement manager at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Her work at the research council involved mentoring and evaluating their public engagement grants programme, co-producing a programme of engagement work with the early career researcher forum and managing the grants portfolio of STFC’s Wonder Initiative, focusing on audience-driven public engagement with under-served communities.

Elizabeth currently enjoys the privilege of serving as the Vice-President for Membership at the Institute of Physics – championing member voices. She participates on the IOP Inclusion & Diversity Committee, feeding into the development of the newly launched Physics Inclusion Award and has engaged parliament to advocate for the whole school approach to equity and inclusion.

Elizabeth is also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Astronomer Emeritus at Royal Museums Greenwich and Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Surrey.
